Scottsdale Economy and Demographics

The tourism industry is Scottsdale’s premier employer, accounting for approximately 40% of the city’s workforce.  The city of Scottsdale by itself is home to more than 75 resorts and hotels, which provide over 16,000 hotel rooms.  It is tied with Atlanta for fourth, after New York City, Las Vegas and Chicago respectively, as having the most AAA Five-Diamond hotels and resorts in the United States.  In 2015, AAA distinguished four such properties in Scottsdale with the highest honor: The Phoenician, The Canyon Suites, Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North and the Fairmont Princess Resort and Spa.  As of 2016, Scottsdale had the highest number of destination spas per capita of any city in the United States.

The Mayo Clinic has one of its three major branches in Scottsdale.  The establishment of this first-rate medical facility in the Southwest and its resulting effects have made Scottsdale an attractive destination for medical care.  This, in turn, has spawned the growth of other first-rate medical facilities in the vicinity.

Among the companies headquartered in Scottsdale are APL, Cold Stone Creamery, Dial, Discount Tire, Discovery Land Company, Fender Guitar, Go Daddy, JDA Software, Kahala, Kona Trill, Magellan Health, Paradise Bakery Café, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, Rural Mero and the United, Axon and Blood Services.  The top employers in the City are Honor Health, CVS Health, Scottsdale Unified School District, Vanguard, City of Scottsdale, General Dynamics Mission Systems, Mayo Clinic, Nationwide Specialty Insurance, Yelp and McKesson

Golf

Scottsdale is continuously ranked as one of the premier golf and resort destinations in the world.  It is also home to the WM Phoenix Open Golf Tournament held at the Tournament Players Club every year.   In all, the city is home to more than 205 area courses offering layouts that range from the rolling green fairways of traditional courses to desert golf design.  Among the premier golf courses in the area are The Boulders Resort & Golden Spa, the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, FireRock, The Phoenician, Silverleaf and Desert Mountain.

Sports and Recreation.

The City of Scottsdale is the spring training home of the San Francisco Giants and the Scottsdale Scorpions, a minor league baseball team in the Arizona Fall League.  Cactus League Spring Training Games are plentiful.  In February 2011, the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks began sharing a new training facility, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.  The Phoenix Metropolitan area also hosts the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks, NBA’s Phoenix Suns and the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes.

Hiking, rock climbing and other similar outdoor activities are extremely popular because of the immediate accessibility of the mountain areas within or very near the city limits.
